Winter on Hilton Head Island: Weather, What to Pack, and Things to Do

By Hilton Head Insider

Winter is one of the best times to visit Hilton Head Island with your family. The pace is slower, the trails and beaches feel more spacious, and it’s easier to say “yes” to the kind of days that everyone enjoys—wildlife watching, hands-on museum visits, boat rides, and plenty of time outside.

To help you plan, we’re breaking down what winter weather is really like, what to pack so everyone stays comfortable from sunrise to dinner, and a mix of family-friendly fun and outdoor adventures—plus winter golf and tennis for those who want to add a little friendly competition to the trip.

What is winter really like on Hilton Head Island?

We’re grateful for our mild, subtropical climate year-round here on Hilton Head Island. The Island encompasses 42 square miles of Lowcountry landscapes—from marshlands and lagoons to preserves, parks, and (of course) beaches to explore in every season.

If you’re traveling from colder climates, America’s Favorite Island® can feel like a welcome change of pace in the heart of winter. Throughout January, February, and March, the weather on Hilton Head Island is often mild and comfortable for getting outside, while evenings are cooler and definitely pack-a-jacket weather.

What to Pack for a Winter Visit to the Lowcountry

Layers, layers, layers! With warmer days and cooler nights, pack easy pieces you can add or remove throughout the day. If you’re waking up early for a beach sunrise (highly recommended), bring a cozy sweater or light jacket—and keep one handy for evenings after sunset.

Looking to explore our beautiful natural ecosystems? Don’t forget a comfortable pair of hiking or walking shoes. These can make a world of difference in every season, keeping you dry and warm as you explore miles of trails and pathways through nature preserves. And don’t underestimate the value of an extra pair of socks. They’re a must-have for beach walks, bike rides, and outdoor dinners when the temperature dips.

Family-Friendly Fun All Winter Long

Winter on Hilton Head Island is an ideal season for families who love the outdoors. During this quieter period, it's an ideal time for wildlife watching, photography, and guided tours.

  • For the wildlife enthusiasts: Winter’s quieter trails, beaches, and creeks make it easier to spot local wildlife—especially on boat and nature outings.
  • For water lovers: Dolphin cruises from Outside Hilton Head run through Broad Creek, where you can learn from the knowledgeable guides on board, with a chance to see Atlantic bottlenose dolphins in the wild. Bring your cameras and an extra layer for the breezier conditions on the water!
  • For hands-on learners: Visit the Coastal Discovery Museum and explore their winter programming and family-friendly activities. Check their winter calendar for current offerings like guided tours, kids’ programs, and nature-focused workshops.
  • For the swashbuckling family: If you’re visiting in later winter, take the family for an interactive pirate cruise with Pirates of Hilton Head. A family favorite, you’ll experience about an hour and a half boat ride on a kid-friendly pirate ship on the Calibogue Sound, with face paint, pirate names, dress-up, and treasure for the little ones.

Insider tip: Need equipment for your family adventure? You can rent all the gear you’ll need, from bikes to strollers and so much more, with Hilton Head Outfitters & Bike Rentals.

Outdoor Adventures for Every Taste

It’s always  a great time to get outside, with winter being no exception. Here are a few favorite spots for everything from easy walks to full-day adventures.

  • Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge: A go-to spot for hiking and biking with miles of flat, scenic trails through marshes and tidal creeks. Bring binoculars for winter birding and keep an eye out for wildlife along the way.
  • Daufuskie Island: A true “day-trip” adventure—reachable only by boat and full of character. Explore historic landmarks, local studios, and quiet coastal scenery on a guided tour or self-paced visit.
  • The Sea Pines Forest Preserve: A peaceful place to wander among boardwalks, wetlands, and maritime forest. Don’t miss the Vanishing Swamp and the Sea Pines Shell Ring, plus the scenic trail network throughout the preserve.
  • Audubon Newhall Preserve: A smaller, easy-walking preserve on the south end of the island with wide, accessible paths and boardwalks—great for a quick nature break or visitors who prefer a shorter stroll. Free guided nature tours are available here on Tuesday and Thursday at 8:30 AM, with the meeting point in the preserve parking lot.
  • Burkes Beach: A quieter beach option with a seaside path that’s ideal for a walk or bike ride. At high tide, you may spot “The Folly,” a temporary creek that forms as ocean water flows into the adjacent salt marsh—fun for exploring and wildlife watching.
