Future Plans for Bike Programs and Paths
Recognized as one of just 21 U.S. communities to achieve the Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Community Award from the League of American Bicyclists, Hilton Head Island is committed to improving biking conditions through its investment in bicycling promotion, education, infrastructure, and pro-bicycling policies. In fact, Hilton Head Island is the only Gold Level community in the Southeast and one of only two towns on the East Coast to receive this designation.
The town will continue to construct pathways as scheduled in the capital improvement program. The Greater Island Council, a non-profit organization with 100 community leaders has identified biking programs as a key part of its mission to “help make Hilton Head Island a better place to live”.
The Coastal Discovery Museum is in the beginning stages of developing bicycle tours of the area with both historical interest and a focus on the natural environment. The vision is to make these bicycle tours available to both visitors and residents.
By virtue of the continuous and significant investments in multi-use pathways, the Town of Hilton Head Island demonstrates a commitment to bicycling. As a result, Hilton Head Island is known as a recreational bicycle destination for more than 2,000,000 visitors who come here every year, and rent or bring their bicycles to the Island.
