The Town of Hilton Head Island provides printed maps of multi-use pathways, which are available at the Town Hall and on-line at the town’s website. Maps of the town’s multi-use pathway network are posted at pathway kiosks, and there are a number of commercially produced maps available at full service and bike rental shops, hotels, vacation rental properties, restaurants and areas frequented by visitors which detail bicycle routes, places to go, and things to do.

The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce has maps and suggested routes available in the “official vacation planner” and on-line at the chamber website. The full service bicycle shops provide organized ride and route information, some of which is available online at the Kickin’ Asphalt Bike Club website. Located through the island pathways are information biking kiosks that show the maps of paved pathways.

Future Plans for Bike Programs and Paths

The Town of Hilton Head Island plans to increase the community-wide celebration of National Bike Month with a variety of activities including marrying ghost bikes with the annul Ride of Silence, a new bike event; Spirit and Spokes 2011, a new League of American Bicyclists Traffic 101 course, held in conjunction with the Palmetto Cycling Coalition.

The town will continue to construct pathways as scheduled in the capital improvement program. The Greater Island Council, a non-profit organization with 100 community leaders has identified biking programs as a key part of its mission to “help make Hilton Head Island a better place to live”.

The Coastal Discovery Museum is in the beginning stages of developing bicycle tours of the area with both historical interest and a focus on the natural environment. The vision is to make these bicycle tours available to both visitors and residents.

By virtue of the continuous and significant investments in multi-use pathways, the Town of Hilton Head Island demonstrates a commitment to bicycling. As a result, Hilton Head Island is known as a recreational bicycle destination for more than 2,000,000 visitors who come here every year, and rent or bring their bicycles to the Island.
