Callaway Golf Loves Hilton Head Island

It’s one of those marriages that just sort of happened for a number of reasons, yet looks like it might have been scripted. In fact, part of it was scripted, but only the “vows”.

Callaway Golf and Hilton Head Island are in the midst of a very, very happy relationship, begun a few years ago when, as the story goes, Callaway’s club-making guru Roger Cleveland met some executives from Boeing at the RBC Heritage (presented by Boeing) Pro-Am. One thing led to another during a round of golf (which is one of the beauties of the game) and the club-maker and plane-maker got their top engineers together to trade intel and, as Boeing likes to say, take the “Runway to the Fairway” to launch the new Callaway XR 16 Driver.  How’s that workin out? We’re getting ahead of ourselves.

Go for the Gold: 50 Years of RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing

For half a century, the country’s top golfers have been gathering on Hilton Head Island to compete in the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing, an annual golf tournament hosted at Harbour Town Golf Links inside The Sea Pines Resort. What started as a fledgling PGA-level tournament at a brand-new golf course over Thanksgiving weekend in 1969 has become a beloved, and much-anticipated, event within the golf community. Spectators from across the country arrive every year decked out in their finest plaid gear to cheer on their favorite players and enjoy Hilton Head Island.

The total purse for the elevated 2023 RBC Heritage at The Sea Pines Resort’s Harbour Town Golf Links was $20 million. Winner Matt Fitzpatrick took home a whopping $3.6 million. Jordan Spieth, who finished second in a dramatic three-hole playoff against Fitzy, won $2.18 million … as compared to the $1.44 he pocketed last year winning the tournament.

Want Your Kids to Love Golf? Bring Them to Hilton Head Island

There is something Hilton Head Island has perfected over the years: fun family vacations. Sprinkle in some fun on the golf course and it might make you sing.

Doug Weaver is sort of like a Pied Piper of golf. The director of instruction at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort pulls out a golf club and people gather around, be they tots, teens or grandparents. What’s his secret? He adores golf and it’s kind of contagious.

Starting with toddlers, he gets them into the game with a few instructional songs and silliness. (See the Youth programs at Palmetto Dunes video). The program is Little Swingers, but maybe it should be called Little Singers.

“The songs give them the structure for success,” Weaver said. “Everyone likes success.
