Seven for Sipping: Golf Island’s Best 19th Holes

Few golf destinations have mastered the art and science of rest and relaxation like Hilton Head Island. Driving over the bridge on Highway 278 from Bluffton and onto “the rock” is a cathartic experience as worries evaporate into the salty Atlantic air. And the feeling carries over to “Golf Island’s” 30-plus courses, where rounds are celebrated, and the next day’s plans are made, over post-round libations and fresh fare. Here’s a sampling of some of Golf Island's best 19th holes should the need for a post-round pitstop strike.

1. Quarterdeck, The Sea Pines Resort

While it’s not a traditional clubhouse 19th hole, we’d be remiss in not including one of the island’s most iconic bars in this lineup. The Quarterdeck at The Sea Pines Resort is located just a smooth pitching wedge from the 18th hole of Harbour Town Golf Links. Originally opened in 1971, it was recently demolished and reopened in April ahead of the RBC Heritage. Golfers can now enjoy indoor and outdoor seating, a wrap-around deck, an indoor bar and a rooftop oyster bar.

2. Lagerhead Tavern, Oyster Reef

Oyster Reef is one of the island’s most scenic – and challenging – golf courses. So, you can bet there will be a lot to talk about after a round on this Rees Jones signature layout. Golfers can do just that at Lagerhead Tavern, which opened in 2015. The interior features warm wood and muted earth tones paired with outstanding views that add to the coastal, casual and fun atmosphere. The beers are ice-cold, and the menu is chock-full of farm-and-fish to table offerings.

3. Big Jim’s, Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort

At the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort, Big Jim’s might be the Golf Island’s most traditional 19th hole-slash-watering hole to settle additional bets from the course over tasty food and spirits, or while you play a few extra “virtual” holes at the resort’s covered Toptracer Range. Outdoor seating overlooks the course, and the Big Jim’s menu does an outstanding job with the classics: BBQ, burgers and pizza. Enjoy “delayed cam” footage of your 18th green approaches on the TV inside Big Jim’s.

4. The Southern Café, Old South Golf Links

Old South Golf Links boasts an incredible setting along the Intracoastal Waterway on Bluffton’s eastern edge. And The Southern Café takes advantage of its location with seating overlooking the lagoon, practice facility and first tee. Golfers can grab a drink and casual fare inside or on the new Shark Lounge, a screened-in porch perfect for breezy Lowcountry afternoons.

5. The Player’s Pub, Hilton Head National

Hilton Head National’s Player’s Pub has long been a favorite “hang” among local golfers. It’s decidedly old-school atmosphere, reminiscent of a turn-of-the-century pub, creates a relaxing atmosphere for unwinding after an enjoyable round on the Gary Player, Bobby Weed designed layout. Favorites include the “National Burger” and triple-decker club sandwich. Breakfast is also available and pairs nicely with a Bloody Mary.

6. Brickyard Pub, Shipyard Golf Club

The Brickyard Pub at 27-hole Shipyard Golf Club was unveiled just before the RBC Heritage in 2016 and has been serving up high-end gastropub fare ever since. For hungry, thirsty golfers logging a round on any combo of the Clipper, Galleon or Brigantine Courses, a menu awaits replete with appetizers like soft pretzels and fried green tomatoes, and hearty entrees such as fish and chips and Guinness brat. Many foursomes will take on the “Yard of Wings,” featuring 36 wings available in four sauces.

7. Robber’s Row Grill, Port Royal Golf and Racquet Club

Robber’s Row Grill bills itself as the perfect place to relax “before, after or instead” of golf. Not that golfers should be deterred from playing either of the facility’s 18-hole layouts; but the drink and food menus are exhaustive and it’s easy to lose track of time in this cozy enclave. Outdoor seating is available for those who prefer to soak up the island sunshine.
