Harbour Town Is Still A “Bucket List” Course

Sure, we’d all love to play the all-time ‘wow’ courses like Augusta National, Pine Valley, and Cypress Point. But the odds of that are pretty slim—believe me, I’ve tried. Even my wife, who used to be pretty connected in the media business (the legendary late-astronaut/senator Mr. Glenn used to say to her, “you can call me John”) couldn’t find the key to opening those gates.

But there are still a whole lot of ‘bucket list’ experiences that us ‘regular’ golfers can enjoy. Joe Passov of Golf Magazine listed 15 of them a few years back and has now cut the list to 10. Hilton Head Island’s Harbour Town Golf Links is still on it, even after Hurricane Matthew last fall.

Passov didn’t write any new descriptions of his Top 10 Bucket List Courses (that we can play), but in 2013 he wrote of Harbour Town that “just following in the footsteps of past champions Arnold Palmer, co-designer Jack Nicklaus and Davis Love III is reason enough to make this a must-play.”

But in a look to the future, he also noted that improvements to the course then would make “Harbour Town’s shot values appear intact for the next 40 years.”

Three other courses to “Dye” for made his newest bucket list, TPC Sawgrass, Whistling Straits and Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course. With Bandon Dunes, Bethpage Black, Pinehurst #2 and Pebble Beach also on the list, Harbour Town is in pretty dogleg-good company.

How many of the courses have you played? How many would you love to? Life’s short, and John Glenn was never an avid golfer.
