Food “Fore” Thought
Hilton Head Island offers an array of active lifestyle pursuits, all of which easily work up an appetite.
Especially golf – after all, conquering Harbour Town Golf Links, The Ocean Course at Palmetto Dunes and more than 30 other courses on “Golf Island” takes a lot out of you.
Thankfully, several golf clubs and resorts on Hilton Head Island are one-stop shops for both fabulous golf and dining experiences. Gone are the days of hot dogs rotating on a mini-Ferris wheel under a heat lamp, or that week-old sandwich smashed at the bottom of the beverage cart. Instead, think worthy dining options with that Carolina charm.
Here are some top choices for on-course, on-resort dining:
LINKS, An American Grill – Situated within the all-new Harbour Town Clubhouse, LINKS, an American Grill offers wonderful dining overlooking one of America’s greatest golf courses. The menu emphasizes grilled selections and creative twists on tried-and-true American classics. Our favorite: the Southern Living Burger, a steakhouse patty with pimento cheese, bacon, fried green tomatoes and chipotle herb aioli between two brioche buns. 843.363.8380
Big Jim’s BBQ, Burgers & Pizza – No foursome at Palmetto Dunes should complain about menu options after visiting this local favorite. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, its namesake items are must-haves, as well as homemade soups, salads, seafood and steaks. Big Jim’s is also a happening spot for Happy Hour. 843.785.1165
LagerHead Tavern – Craving Southern food after four hours of Lowcountry enjoyment at Oyster Reef Golf Club? Head to LagerHead Tavern, an inviting eatery showcasing down-home comfort food with a twist. Chefs Toscano and Seaglund utilize fresh, regional ingredients in signature dishes such as Shrimp Gazpacho, Seafood Chowder and the Low Country Reuben featuring in-house pulled pork and slow-smoked Smithfield ham from Virginia. 843.681.2184
Live Oak – Located at the Plantation Golf Club clubhouse at Sea Pines, Live Oak is a fresh culinary experience offering spectacular Lowcountry-inspired cuisine and locally sourced produce and products. Just as tantalizing as the menu are 270-degree, jaw-dropping golf views. A 35-foot rotunda ceiling and floor-to-ceiling windows provide an upscale ambiance (resort attire required), while the copper-top bar is a fantastic spot to sample an expansive collection of craft beers. 843.842.1441
Coast – For oceanfront dining, stop by the Sea Pines Beach Club and experience Coast. Specializing in fresh, local sea fare, the Coast menu also includes burgers and sandwiches. Stunning oceanfront views make sure the eyes are just as pleased as the palate. 843.842.1888
