Battle of Fort Sullivan

Daufuskie Island and the Gunpowder Seizure

By Hilton Head Insider

Morning

Board The Daufuskie Difference ferry for a scenic crossing toward Bloody Point — the site of the 1775 gunpowder seizure that helped supply George Washington’s army.

Upon arrival, explore Bloody Point Beach, where roughly fifty Beaufort men and militia from South Carolina and Georgia confiscated vital munitions. Some of that powder reached Boston during the Siege.

Visit the Bloody Point Lighthouse Museum for contextual exhibits connecting coastal defense to the broader Southern Campaign.

Afternoon

Lunch at Old Daufuskie Crab Co., overlooking the Cooper River. Fresh seafood, salt air, and Revolutionary context create a uniquely Lowcountry experience.

Explore the Haig Point Ruins — remnants of plantation structures that reflect the economic world tied to Revolutionary allegiances.

Return to Hilton Head Island Island mid-afternoon.

Evening

Dinner at Black Marlin Bayside Grill, located just over the Charles E. Fraser Bridge in Palmetto Bay Marina. This waterfront favorite pairs Lowcountry seafood, coastal cocktails, and relaxed harbor views — a fitting close to a day spent tracing the maritime story of the Revolution.

If visiting June 28–July 4, 2026, attend Carolina Day programming on Hilton Head Island Island recognizing the 1776 defense of Sullivan’s Island and its ripple effect throughout South Carolina’s Revolutionary story.
