Mitchelville & The Gullah Museum: Foundations of Freedom and Memory

Date:  - 6:30 PM

Location: Coastal Discovery Museum | Sea Island Room 70 Honey Horn Drive, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926

Maps & Directions

On Tuesday, February 10, we turn to stories rooted in Mitchelville, Freedom Town, and the Gullah Museum of Hilton Head Island.

Mitchelville was one of the first self-governing towns established by formerly enslaved people in America - on Hilton Head Island during the Civil War - where residents elected officials, passed by-laws, and built a community from the ground up.

Meanwhile, the Gullah Museum of Hilton Head (founded in 2003 by local Native Islander Louise Miller Cohen) preserves and shares Gullah history, customs, stories, and art for visitors and for descendants seeking connection to their heritage.

This evening will explore how the resilient spirit of Mitchelville and the Museum's mission together anchor the Gullah story - not just as history, but as a living, breathing tradition.
