Location: Daufuskie Island Shelter Cove Marina, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926
Maps & DirectionsStep Back in Time on Daufuskie Island.
Tucked between Hilton Head and the mainland, and accessible only by boat, Daufuskie Island is often described as "the other side of the river" - a hidden gem where time seems to stand still. This small-group excursion offers an intimate journey into the island's rich history, cultural traditions, and creative spirit.
Guided by an experienced interpretive naturalist and USCG-licensed captain, you'll explore the island's undeveloped side, visiting remarkable landmarks such as:
First Union African Baptist Church - a cornerstone of island faith and community.
The Praise House - where songs, prayer, and traditions still echo.
Mary Field's School - where author Pat Conroy once taught and drew inspiration.
Local Artisan Studios - meet Daufuskie's resident makers keeping crafts alive.
Along the way, enjoy opportunities to observe wildlife, stroll beneath moss-draped oaks, and discover the island's quiet beauty.
You'll also gain insight into the Gullah culture - descendants of enslaved West Africans who settled here in the 1700s. With African and European influences, the Gullah people preserved unique language, cuisine, and customs for more than a century, despite tremendous struggles.
More than just a tour, this is a rare opportunity to connect with the spirit of the Lowcountry, experiencing history, culture, and artistry in an unforgettable setting.
