Your Guide to Shopping on Hilton Head Island
Shopping on Hilton Head Island goes well beyond beach souvenirs. You can bring home a handbag with roots on neighboring Daufuskie Island, buy shrimp from a family that has worked in the local seafood business for generations, browse crafts at a longtime island gallery, or find a handwoven sweetgrass basket tied to Gullah tradition.
And if what you need is less sentimental and more practical — a new golf shirt, better gear for a day on the water, or something good to cook at your vacation rental — we have you covered there, too.
What You'll Find in This Guide
- Hilton Head Island boutiques for clothing, accessories, and Lowcountry style
- Shops for fresh seafood, Italian specialties, and food to enjoy during your stay
- Golf and outdoor stores for apparel, equipment, and beach or water essentials
- Galleries and shops featuring original art, Gullah culture, craft, antiques, and home décor
Hilton Head Island Boutiques for Fashion and Lowcountry Style
If you want to come home with something you'll keep wearing after your vacation, start at Shelter Cove. There are plenty of fashion shops around Shelter Cove Towne Centre and Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina, so it’s a fun place to browse when you’re in the mood to wander between shops and see what catches your eye.
Birdie James
Birdie James is the place to look when your taste lands on the polished side of casual. Its Hilton Head Island flagship at Shelter Cove Towne Centre focuses on women's clothing and accessories with a classic-meets-current aesthetic.
The selection feels considered rather than overwhelming, with pieces that work just as well for dinner on the Island as they do back home. This isn't a store where you have to work through rack after rack to find the good piece.
Coastal Bliss
Coastal Bliss, also at Shelter Cove Towne Centre, goes brighter and more playful. Owners Blake and Christina hand-pick the merchandise, with colorful clothing, bold accessories, and gifts taking up much of the mix.
The shop carries limited quantities of individual styles, with plenty of color, print, and personality in the mix.
Spartina 449
Spartina 449 has one of the clearest Lowcountry connections of any fashion brand you'll find here. The company was founded with roots on nearby Daufuskie Island, and its designs continue to draw on the colors, places, and natural surroundings of the region.
At its Shelter Cove Towne Centre store, you'll find handbags, jewelry, accessories, and other pieces from the brand. If your goal is to bring home something that feels specifically connected to this part of South Carolina, Spartina belongs near the top of the list.
Southern Tide
For coastal sportswear, Southern Tide has a Signature Store at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina near the Neptune statue. The South Carolina brand carries apparel and accessories for men, women, and children.
Golfers will find plenty here, but you don't need a tee time to make use of the shop. It's a good choice for polos, layers, and casual clothing that fit naturally into an Island wardrobe.
Where to Shop for Food on Hilton Head Island
Some of the best things you can buy here aren't meant to survive the trip home. If you're staying somewhere with a kitchen, a local seafood dinner or fresh pasta gives you a good excuse to eat in for a night.
Benny Hudson Seafood
For seafood, Benny Hudson Seafood is the name to know. The Hudson family's connection to Hilton Head Island's seafood industry stretches across five generations, and the market on Shrimpers Row sells local, domestic, and imported seafood according to what's available.
Selection changes with the season. Local shrimp, oysters, cobia, snapper, grouper, flounder, and other fish may appear depending on timing, so it's better to ask what's good that day than arrive fixed on one species.
If you're feeding a group, Benny Hudson also offers Lowcountry boil bundles with shrimp, sausage, corn, potatoes, onions, seasoning, and the other basics needed for dinner.
The Market Cafe at Michael Anthony's
The Market Cafe at Michael Anthony's is ideal when dinner at the rental sounds better than another restaurant reservation, but cooking everything from scratch does not.
Its retail shop carries fresh meats and cheeses, breads, house-made soups and sauces, handcrafted pasta, Italian specialty products, and heat-and-serve entrées and sides. You can build a full dinner here, or just pick up the parts you don't feel like making yourself.
Golf and Outdoor Shops on Hilton Head Island
Golf, biking, paddling, fishing, and days on the beach are a big part of life on Hilton Head Island. That also means the Island has shops that offer more than just logo hats and souvenir shirts.
Outside Hilton Head
Outside Hilton Head started as a windsurfing school in 1979 and has grown into one of the area's best-known outdoor operators. Its flagship retail store at The Plaza at Shelter Cove carries outdoor clothing, gear, and accessories for paddling, boating, and spending time outdoors in the Lowcountry.
This is where we'd send someone who, after arriving, realized their gear isn't quite right for the week ahead. You can shop with the activities here in mind rather than guessing what will actually be useful on the water.
Palmetto Dunes Golf Pro Shops
Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort has three golf courses, each with a dedicated pro shop.
The Robert Trent Jones Pro Shop has a particularly broad selection of golf apparel, accessories, equipment, and Palmetto Dunes merchandise. The Arthur Hills and George Fazio shops also carry course-ready clothing, hats, gloves, accessories, and other essentials.
Peter Millar and Travis Mathew are among the brands carried across the shops. If you want a useful souvenir from a round on Hilton Head Island, course-logo apparel makes a lot more sense than something that might spend the next five years in a kitchen drawer.
Palmetto Dunes also has a separate Tennis & Pickleball Pro Shop, so racquet players aren't left shopping from the golf racks.
Where to Buy Art, Gullah Craft, and Distinctly Lowcountry Gifts
Hilton Head Island has a strong community of artists, makers, and locally owned shops. You’ll find original paintings, handcrafted décor, Gullah art and books, sweetgrass baskets, and work by artists from across the Lowcountry and beyond.
Binya
Binya is a Gullah- and Lowcountry-focused gift shop on Spanish Wells Road. Its name comes from a Gullah term meaning “been here,” used for native islanders and people with ancestral ties to Hilton Head Island.
The shop was created by a Binya to celebrate and share Gullah heritage. You’ll find books, art, sweetgrass baskets, accessories, and gifts that celebrate Gullah culture and life in the Lowcountry.
If you'd like to learn more about Hilton Head Island's Gullah history while you're here, pair your shopping with visits to cultural sites such as Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park and the Gullah Museum of Hilton Head Island.
Sea Love Candle Bar and Boutique
Sea Love Candle Bar and Boutique lets you create the souvenir yourself. Choose from more than 100 fragrances and create your own signature Lowcountry-scented candle to take home with you. Their expert staff will guide you through the process, helping you narrow down scents and share insights on capturing the perfect scent that feels just like you.
And if you'd rather show off your new scent outside the home? You can create a signature perfume to transport you back to Hilton Head Island with a simple spray.
Camellia Art
If you’re searching for original artwork, Camellia Art is worth browsing. The Hilton Head Island gallery features paintings, photography, sculpture, and other fine art from regional and national artists, along with museum-quality custom framing and art consultation services.
Branches
Branches is one of the more distinctive home shops on Hilton Head Island. The family-owned business has operated for more than 30 years and specializes in permanent botanicals and florals, custom designs, antiques, salvaged finds, and home décor.
Come here when you're interested in your house, not your closet. The mix changes, and that's part of the appeal. Branches also creates custom faux-floral and greenery arrangements if you have a particular space in mind.
