Docents serve as dynamic cultural volunteer and educators for the Bluffton Gullah Cultural Heritage Center. They are responsible for engaging guests through immersive storytelling, facilitating meaningful interactions, and providing in-depth knowledge of black and Gullah culture, history, and exhibits. With excellent communication skills and a deep passion for heritage, docents are the living bridge between the past and present.
Strong oral communication skills
Outgoing, warm, and welcoming personality (comfortable with hugging/shaking hands)
Flexible availability, including weekends and events
Passion for history and cultural storytelling
Deep knowledge of black and Gullah culture, including:
Spiritual traditions
Cuisine
Music
Arts
Agriculture and land cultivation
Understanding of Bluffton history in relation to the black and Gullah community
Familiarity with Gullah language and dialect
Strong interpersonal skills
Comfortable with public speaking and guest engagement
Willingness to represent the Center at local community events
