The first LoCo Motion came at the perfect time for me last year. Three weeks prior to the event my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. As my entire family pulled together to support my sister during what was going to be a very long journey I started running/training to take part in the LoCo Motion. Running was my time to clear my head and find strength to share with my sister.
Tuesday, September 27, 2011 Kim had a double mastectomy. Friday, September 30th the event started. I proudly wore my “Team Kim” shirt as I ran my first 10 miles of the weekend and I found myself telling her story to anybody that would listen to me. There were a lot of great people who listened. The following morning, seeing some familiar faces from the day before, each person asked how my sister was recovering from her surgery. We shared hugs, smiles, prayers and 10 more miles. Each mile I ran was in honor and support of my sister’s journey to recovery. If Kim can beat cancer I can certainly make it another mile. Sunday, miles 21-30, were the miles I was most looking forward to. First and least important, my feet and legs were going to get a well deserved break. Second, my entire family and many friends were walking for “Team Kim “. Third and most inspiring, my sister was planning on meeting us at the finish line!
Only days after major surgery Kim’s goal was to be there to support all of her loved ones who were walking or running in support of her. Almost a year later I can still see the pride on her face as Kim watched her son, daughter, mother, father, sister, brother-in-law, nephew, cousin and friends cross the finish line. That was the moment Kim told us that she would be walking with us the next year. So here it is, only weeks away from LoCo Motion 2012 and we are all gearing up to walk again. This year we walk to celebrate Kim’s one year anniversary of being Cancer FREE!
