Great golf, food & prizes for a wonderful cause — that’s amore!
While I truly love everything about golf – from the ping resulting from a clubface properly connecting with a ball and scenic course landscapes to high tech equipment and apparel, I am particularly fond of the camaraderie, philanthropy and networking opportunity afforded by organized, sociable (i.e. laid back) golf tourneys for a great cause.
Hilton Head Island and the surrounding Lowcountry, home to a generous assortment of stunning public and private courses, abound with golf tournaments that are hosted by a variety of organizations and typically open to everyone, regardless of club affiliation or skill level.
This month, for example, the Italian-American Club of Hilton Head Island will host its 15th annual Italian-American Open Golf Tournament. You don’t have to be Italian to participate in this tourney, or to join this vibrant, energetic club. You simply need to be “Italian at heart.” Of course, a passion for Italian cuisine, hugging and speaking with your hands doesn’t hurt!
The tournament, scheduled to take place June 4 at Old South Golf Links, just over the bridge from Hilton Head Island, will begin at 9 a.m. (originally 8 a.m.) with sign in beginning at 8:30 a.m. (originally 7:30 a.m) The cost is $90 per player, which includes a continental breakfast, greens fees, tons of door prizes, a free gold towel and hat, lunch – including burgers, hotdogs and Italian sausages & peppers – and ample laughs among a friendly crowd.
The tourney will also feature a special hole-in-one contest on the par-3 11th hole. The winner of the contest, which is not open to pros, will receive a 2011 Ford Explorer valued at more than $29,000. Some of the other hole-in-one prizes include: a 3 day/2 night stay at Treetops Resort (Gaylord, MI), a 3 day/2 night stay with Stay & Play (Las Vegas, NV) and a 3 day/2 night stay at the Peabody Hotel (Memphis, TN).
Said Tony Guasto, event chairman, “The key factor is that this tournament is a great value. For only $90 they’re [participants] getting a round of golf, food and lots of prizes. Not to mention, if you’ve never played at Old South, it’s a beautiful course. It’s really a fun day for a great cause.”
The deadline to reserve your spot was ‘officially’ June 1, but the club may have openings beyond this date so please call to confirm. To register, contact Tony Guasto: 843.301.8998 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
