Old McDonald Had a Farm…on Hilton Head Island?

Did you know that you can pet and feed (and ooh and ahh and baby talk to) a deer on Hilton Head Island? The Sea Pines Resort has made every child and animal lover’s dream come true. You can get up close and personal with the Island’s very own Bambi mascot…actually her name is Callie.

The folks at Lawton Stables (in The Sea Pines Resort) opened up the first ever small animal farm on Hilton Head Island a little over three years ago. In addition to petting Callie, you can pet (through the fence) and feed a variety of other small animals including goats, sheep, rabbits, donkeys, llama, pot-bellied pigs, chickens, a miniature pony and Harley the Clydesdale—bringing the Old McDonald song to life for your little ones.

Callie joined the Lawton Stables family when she was just a tiny fawn (she still had her spots). Abandoned and malnourished, she wandered into the home of a Sea Pines family and ‘adopted’ them. Luckily, the family had ties to Lawton Stables, where they brought her to live at the animal farm in September 2009.

I first met Callie when she was a newbie to the petting farm. I took my then 2 year old son to check out the new farm resident. Rumor had it she walked freely throughout the zoo! It was true—Callie greeted us as we entered the gate and then followed us all around (I think it helped that we had carrots in our pockets). We still frequent the petting farm as a special treat or when we’re looking for something to do as a family on the weekends. It’s the perfect break from marathon beach days—when you’re poor pink skin can’t take any more! Or it’s a great stop on your way into Harbour Town for dinner at the Crazy Crab and singing under the Liberty Oak with Island icon entertainer Gregg Russell.

The small animal farm is open every day 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There are a couple important rules to note, folks:

  • Lawton Stables is a non-smoking facility
  • Young children should be supervised at all times, and please leave Fido at home
  • The Dept. of Agriculture has asked that you do not feed the animals except with approved foods provided by the Stables (please check with the office if you are interested in feeding the animals).

Lawton Stables is located in The Sea Pines Resort at 190 Greenwood Drive. You can contact Lawton Stables at 843-671-2586 or email them at info@lawtonstableshhi.com with questions.
