Recently I had the opportunity to peruse a lovely coffee table book featuring our very own town of Bluffton, South Carolina. It is called, Bluffton, Changing Tides The Photography of Marge Agin and it is chocked full of extraordinary photography by the talented Marge Agin. Moreover, it is also laced with the recollections, anecdotes, and quotes of Bluffton residents, the characters, if you will, who have helped shape the singular “state of mind” that is Bluffton.
As I turned the pages, admiring the beauty of Bluffton through the photographs laid before me and read the honest, touching and often times funny words from those Bluffton “characters” it inspired a few thoughts of my own. First, isn’t it wonderful that all these local folks who love Bluffton are willing to share it with rest of the world? And while most of the “characters” featured in Changing Tides are life-long Blufftonites with their own personal take on it’s “state of mind”, I wonder what the newbie to Bluffton or better yet, the visitor, would declare as their “Bluffton state of mind”?
Hum…interesting. For example, former Bluffton mayor Emmett McCracken vividly relates in Changing Tides, it may be as simple as a high spring tide on the May River…as seen from “a pew in the Church of the Cross on a Sunday morning…one needed little convincing that God has been good to us. One just needed to move the service along so one could get on the river!”
Having resided in Bluffton for 5 years myself, I know this to be a very accurate insight; shared by many locals I’m sure.
