Restoring, Preserving, and Sharing the Gullah Culture
The vision of the Gullah Museum is to preserve the Gullah Geechee history, culture, customs traditions, language, stories, songs and structures of Hilton Head Island, SC "keeping us connected to our past". Hilton Head Island is traditional home of Gullah Geechees, an African American farming fishing and oystering culture that spanned from North Carolina to Florida. In 2010, preservationists led an effort to preserve that culture in form of "The Little House". The small blue house was built for William Simmons, also known as "Bubba Duey", on land purchased by his formerly enslaved grandfather with the money he earned by enlisting in the Civil War. The house represents what Gullah Culture was like on the island before the bridge was built in 1956.
