Gullah Heritage Trails Tours

When the Civil War ended and the slaves of South Carolina’s plantations were freed, many stayed on the Sea Islands, keeping the Gullah culture alive and well. Native Islanders will introduce you to the food, religion and folktales of the Gullah people, as well as historic Gullah sites such as Mitchelville Freedom Park, the site of one of the first towns established for freed slaves after the Civil War. You’ll also see some of the island’s tabby ruins — all that remain of plantation buildings constructed in the 18th and 19th centuries by burning crushed oyster shells to make lime, which was then mixed with sand, shells and water.

Take a guided tour of historic Fort Mitchel and learn about Hilton Head’s role as a Union stronghold during the Civil War, or get in touch with your roots with a lecture and lesson on genealogical research.
