Planning an early fall getaway to Hilton Head Island? Do you love gourmet comfort food washed down with artisan beer? If the answer to either is ‘yes’, then may I suggest you mosey on over to the Island the weekend of September 28th. Allow plenty of time to imbibe with a fine selection of beers and a bevy of gourmet burgers and burger-styled creations at the 2nd annual TD Bank Hilton Head Burgers & Brew Festival.
This event adds another ‘locals favorite’ to the growing list of foodie festivals to be found on the Island and it’s environs between September and May. Held at the waterside Shelter Cove Park, this ‘fest supports the Island Recreation Center Children’s Scholarship Fund and celebrates both the burger and the beer, to me THE all-American comfort food duet.
Last year’s inaugural event brought out the local restaurant scene’s best chef’s competing for burger bragging rights. Charbar Co. and their signature house ground beef blend topped with Benton’s bacon marmalade, sharp cheddar cheese, house made dill pickle and Dijon mustard garnered top honors by being named “Best Burger”. Other contestants included a Buckeye Slider (angus burger, pepper jack cheese, Tony Packo pickles, onion ring, Ben’s Mustard) from Coco’s on the Beach and Hudson’s Seafood House On the Docks’ Maytag blue cheese caramelized onion brisket burger.
Yes, not every ‘burger’ is composed of the ubiquitous ingredient of ground beef, so if you’ve always had a hankering to try something different in the realm of burger-dom this is your chance! Last year’s offerings also included a Reuben burger (pretzel bun, corned beef, Swiss, sauerkraut, 1000 island dressing) from Frankie Bones and the Triple “B” Burger from Harbourside Burgers and Brews. This abbondanza included the chef’s signature blend of ground beef tenderloin/pork belly/applewood smoked bacon with candied bacon, pickled beet, Brie and blackberry caramelized onion jam. Wow! I expect to be no less amazed this year.
And then there’s the beer – over 20 selections including craft and regional brews found at the onsite ‘beer garden’. There is an additional entrance fee for the beer garden of $5 (entry to the festival is also $5 per person) and you’ll receive a souvenir tasting glass.
After ramping up your courage with a trip to the beer garden, test out your singing skills with karaoke or simply chill to the sounds of local favorite Cranford Hollow (previously named Cranford & Sons). For the youngsters there will be a Kid Zone and since it will be game day (college football) across the nation – and hey, you are in the south (!) – catch all the action on the big screen television.
I don’t think the organizers have left out anything – burgers, brews, music and beautiful Hilton Head Island – sounds like a hefty slice of perfection to me!
