The ancient Greeks identified six different forms of love:
Eros = Sexual passion
Philia = Friendship
Ludus = Playful love (i.e. flirting)
Agape = “Yoga love” (my term for love for all beings)
Pragma = Enduring love (i.e. what your grandparents have)
Philautia = Self-love
Whether you have all or one of these love types in your life, Hilton Head is a sweet spot to treat your sweetie(s) with something special and health-conscious. Here are just a few ideas:
For the Chocolate Lover
The Island Fudge Shoppe in Coligny Plaza Shopping Center
Ok, typically you would not associate “fudge” with health food but The Island Fudge Shoppe offers four different sugar-free fudge options and an assortment of sugar-free hand-dipped chocolates. My must-have: The sugar-free dark chocolate walnut fudge made with fructose (so it’s approved for diabetics).
For Those Who Pine for Pino
Pino Gelato in The Village at Wexford
Pino Gelato began as a charming gelateria located in the Village at Wexford and has grown to a chain of Italian gelaterias located throughout the United States. What’s the secret to their success?—The fresh, all-natural ingredients in their gelato and sorbettos. Pino gelato is lower in fat, calories and sugar than traditional ice cream. My recommendation: Show some love with a gift certificate.
For the Über Health Nut
DelisheeeYo in the Village Exchange
I often write about DelisheeeYo in my posts and recommend it to my health coaching clients because, well it’s just that good—both nutrition and taste-wise. This vegetarian cafe-homemade frozen yogurt shop-local organic produce store’s best kept secret is its super balls. This truffle-like treat is made with super foods like soaked nuts and then topped with yummy add-ons like coconut, lemon zest or cacao nibs.
For the Dog Lover
Tail Wiggles in The Village at Wexford
Tail Wiggles’ “barkery” contains large glass cookie jars filled with healthy and yummy dog treats. Whether it’s for Fido or someone who loves their dog, buy a collapsible bowl from Tail Wiggles and stuff it with a grrr-licious assortment of dog biscuits.
For the Early Riser
Signe’s Heaven Bound Bakery & Cafe on Arrow Road
For more than 36 years, Signe’s Heaven Bound Bakery & Cafe has been serving fresh-out-of-the-oven, wholesome baked goods, as well as other staples likes soups, salads and quiches. If you’re not a baker but want to gift a goodie that tastes like you are, try their no-fat apple muffin or gluten-free chocolate almond raspberry cake. (My neighbor, now mother-in-law used to try to pass off Signe’s pies as her own.)
For the Night Owl
Michael Anthony’s in the Orleans Plaza
Modeled after the trattorias of the small towns of Italy with a contemporary twist, Michael Anthony’s Cucina Italiana’s “desire to offer fine cuisine with some of the best wines in the world” has made it one of the most romantic eateries on the Island. Want to end the night with an amorous apéritif?—Try their chocolate martini.
