Time for Bravo! A Celebration Of The Arts, when Hilton Head Island and neighbors showcase their long-running role as the coolest place to enjoy art in the southeast. Bravo! makes it easier than ever to be part of this scene, too.
It takes the whole month of May just to celebrate, and you can dip in anytime you like. No need to dress up; just be there as artists from around the Island and around the world use “the lusty month of May” as one of many occasions to go all out for Hilton Head visitors. Not an art form is overlooked.
One sign that Hilton Head is no newcomer to the art world is this month’s juried show by the Art League of Hilton Head – it’s their 22nd! Artists from all over the nation compete here in seven categories of exhibit, for thousands in cash awards. See their work at the Walter Greer Gallery in the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
More than 200 artists exhibit their works during Bravo! in The Art Galleries of Old Town, next door in Bluffton. What a great place to stroll and enjoy paintings, prints, jewelry, basketry, wood and pottery!
Bluffton powerfully preserves the feel of the sleepy Southern town with something up its sleeve – they call it “the Bluffton state of mind.” Gallery hopping in Old Town is one of many pleasant ways to experience that unique flavor of relaxation and hospitality.
Guests say they expect to see NYC taxis instead of palmetto trees when they leave a performance at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, and for good reason. New York actors audition by the hundreds for Arts Center productions because they just like working in Hilton Head so much. This month it’s Hairspray! Hairspray won eight Tony awards in New York, seven Olivier awards in London; and six times a week through May it wins the hearts of visitors to Hilton Head. For tickets call 843-842-ARTS or visit www.artshhi.com.
This weekend you can catch the final performances of A Cheer From Chawton: A Jane Austin Theatrical, through May 8 at South Carolina Repertory Company. 843-842-2057
During Bravo! theater lovers will find Chicago at the May River, and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night on Shelter Cove, too. These century-spanning crowd pleasers are presented by the May River Theatre 843-815-5581 and the Main Street Youth Theatre 843-689-6246.
A special night of fun comes May 14, with Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra’s “Picnic & Pops” Concert at Rose Hill Plantation. Grab a basket and a blanket and enjoy the evening with JB Scott’s Swingin’ Allstars Dixieland Band. Call the symphony at 843-842-2055, visit www.hhso.org — or heck, just buy tickets, food and beverage on-site! We said Bravo! makes it easy.
There is so much more to Bravo!, it’ll take all month just to touch the high points. Our natural beauty, and the gentle weather we enjoy here, have for generations made Hilton Head Island and the Carolina Lowcountry a home of legends in literature, visionaries of culture and a haven for artists of every kind. Bravo! is just one way to put some focus on the breadth of these riches.
