The interior landscape: “Time and Timelessness” opens at the Society of Bluffton Artists.

We said that this year’s Bravo! Arts & Culture Festival would overflow the customary month of May, and the Society of Bluffton Artists has living proof.  An exhibit that evokes “Time And Timelessness” opens there June 4.

Artist Mary Sullivan goes to the heart of the expressionist’s yearning to capture a fleeting moment, a memory, an emotion, with her poured ink abstracts.  Mary describes her work as discovery, and the series in this exhibit started with a work that suggested to Mary “a dancing ‘figure’ moving along with some timeless, joyful melody.”

The promise of that figure beckoned Mary further into exploring time and timelessness as a theme.  As the work progressed it seemed to call for new techniques.  She used papers that emerged from her ink paintings to add a sculptural feeling and distinction of line.  She reveled in color.  And she allied herself with “the power of white” to make the shapes and colors even more emphatic.

Though abstract, Mary Sullivan’s work is inspired by nature.  It is the “inner landscape” one’s response to the natural world, that she captures.

“Time And Timelessness” is exhibited June 4 though July 14.  Meet Mary Sullivan and other member artists at the opening wine and cheese reception on Sunday, June 10 from 3 pm to 5 pm. The Society of Bluffton Artists (SOBA) is located at the corner of Calhoun and Church Streets in Historic Old Town Bluffton. For information call 843-757-6586.
