Windows on the Waterway is another popular venue for wedding receptions and ceremonies. Located on the north-end of Hilton Head Island in Hilton Head Plantation, it offers your guests an amazing water view with a professional catering staff on-site to handle all your needs.

The Sea Pines Resort has the option for you to get married on the renown 18th green of Harbor Town Golf Course with the iconic Harbor Town Lighthouse in the backdrop!

The quaint chapel located in Palmetto Bluff overlooking the beauty of the May River is another ideal wedding location. Rated by “Travel and Leisure” and “Conde Nast” as a premier destination location.

A to Z of Getting Married on Hilton Head Island (Part Two)

The sun is shining and the weather is perfect on Hilton Head Island! Brides and grooms are busy finalizing their spring wedding plans; vendors are gearing up for a busy wedding season, and guests are finalizing their plans to visit Hilton Head Island for an island-style event.

If you are planning a wedding on Hilton Head Island, make sure you start with one of our recommended wedding vendors.  Hilton Head is lucky to have so many professional wedding vendors available to make any Island wedding picture-perfect.

Speaking of picture-perfect, the Island’s photographers know how to properly shoot a wedding in this area. They understand how to capture the couple with amazing sunset backdrops and how to make brides look flawless on our hottest days.

From officiants to florists, and everyone in between, Hilton Head Island/Bluffton area wedding vendors are available to make your day unforgettable.

If you are planning a destination wedding, be sure to check into an area wedding planner for assistance, or ask the Hilton Head Island/Bluffton Chamber of Commerce wedding specialist to help you get started with your wedding plans.

Information on a Beaufort Country marriage license and permits for beach ceremonies can be found online. Make sure you check local agencies for any questions on beach usage, tent permits, and more.

Recently the Town of Hilton Head Island put a ban on using sky lanterns for any purpose. Sky lanterns have become a “new” item that many couples are using as their send-off at the end of the night. Sky lanterns are lit with fire and then released, so they can become a fire hazard to surrounding trees and homes.

Another Island ordinance that is important for couples to consider is our turtle season. From May 1- October 31st, if your venue is on the beach, it is “Light’s Out” at 10 pm. If there is any light reflecting on the beach, it must be turned off or covered with a shade.

Lastly, don’t forget to have a back-up plan in case of inclement weather or worse, a hurricane. Our hurricane season is June 1st-November 30th. The best thing to do is just to have a plan in place.

No matter what the season, or month, Hilton Head Island is beautiful year round!

We have so much to offer couples planning a wedding, and it’s no wonder we are one of the largest destination wedding locations in the country!

A to Z of Getting Married on Hilton Head Island (Part One)

There are so many reasons why couples choose to get married on Hilton Head Island. From sandy white beaches to sweeping oak trees, lush green golf courses, and spectacular hotels and clubs, Hilton Head Island has many unique and beautiful choices for a wedding any time of year.

My favorite months, and most popular months, for a Hilton Head Island wedding are March-May and September-November. Summer months, although beautiful, can get quite warm during the day, so just plan accordingly.

If it is a destination wedding, most guests will incorporate their vacation with your wedding. You may suggest a villa or home rental for guests that plan on an extended vacation, in addition to the many hotel selectionson the island and in Bluffton. Also, I suggest making a list of activities that your guests can enjoy during any free time they may have during the wedding week or weekend. Hilton Head Island and Bluffton has many award-winning golf courses for the men (and women) to enjoy as well asamazing shopping, restaurants, nightlife and spas to relax during the day.

A Hilton Head Island wedding is also ideal because it is a way of sharing the beauty of adestination resort without having to travel out of the country for a destination wedding; not to mention it is easily accessible by car or plane.

Most couples I work with that have chosen Hilton Head Island as their wedding location, have a sentimental connection here because they have vacationed here with their families growing up. I remember the car rides from Pennsylvania to Hilton Head Island each summer starting in 1979 until we moved here permanently in 1988. I was married on Hilton Head Island in 2002 (just celebrated 10 years-yeah!) and my out-of-town family and friends were thrilled to have such an amazing place to come and visit.

Keep in mind that any wedding nuptials on the beach will require a Town of Hilton Head beach permit. Also, remember to always have a back up plan in case of inclement weather.

Youʼll want to make sure that if you are renting ceremony chairs that you inform your rental company of a beach set-up and chair break-down as sometimes they will charge more for this service.

You may want to walk the area of the beach you are planning on for your nuptials to find a more remote portion of the beach to avoid any man in Speedos in the background of your wedding pictures! You can ask the hotel or resort if the beach umbrellas remain up until a certain time of day as you may want to avoid them in the background as well.

Chances are that if you are marrying on the beach behind a rental home, the area of the beach is more private than that of a resort, however you have more assistance with an on-staff event planner when choosing a resort for a beach ceremony.

Hilton Head and Bluffton also has some amazing church congregations for your wedding ceremony. More than likely they will have some requirements for you if you are planning destination and donʼt belong to their parish, so reaching out to them individually is the best plan.

The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce has an on-staff wedding expert to help guide you in the right direction when choosing a venue. Contact them or a local planner for assistance getting you started with the wedding of your dreams

Use Local Elements to Create Inexpensive Wedding Appeal

At a rehearsal dinner the other evening, we catered a farm-to-table style dinner where the guests dined oceanfront. The wedding rehearsal took place at a beautiful, home on Hilton Head’s North Forest Beach.

Renting a home on Hilton Head Island is a great option for your out-of-town family to rent and host a rehearsal dinner. There are many local rental companies that can assist with accommodations.

When we were planning our table centerpieces, it was our intention to use sand in the bottom of mason jars with a candle for the cocktail tables. However, it was a very rainy day (luckily the storm passed before the dinner) and the sand was too wet to use.  When I came back to the house from the beach, I noticed there were gravel pebbles that were used in the driveway of the home…score! We substituted the gravel for the sand for a beautiful centerpiece.

There were also pretty oyster shells in the beds of the home’s landscape….score again!

*Please know that all these items were returned to the home landscape at the end of the night.

The moral of this story is that Hilton Head Island has so many natural, beautiful elements that can be used in your decor.

Spanish moss and lush greens are everywhere! Shells, sand, moss, palm leaves, and bark are all natural elements create beauty and are inexpensive. They also pay tribute to Hilton Head Island!

How Much Time is Enough?

It is certainly easy to get ahead of yourself when planning a wedding. It is important to get the most important items checked off your list first and focus on the other details later.

There is no reason to work on favors when you haven’t even selected a venue.

Here are the general rules of thumb when picking items to do first, second and third:

  1. Announce your engagement
  2. Set your budget
  3. Pick your ceremony site and reception site
  4. Get an idea of your guest list
  5. Shop for a wedding gown
  6. Choose your wedding party
  7. Select your caterer
  8. Hire your florist
  9. Hire your musicians
  10. Hire your photographer
  11. Hire a videographer
  12. Shop for a wedding cake
  13. Book your salon
  14. Plan accommodations for out of town guests
  15. Send your save the dates
  16. Complete your guest list
  17. Arrange your rehearsal dinner
  18. Order tuxes
  19. Work on wedding bags
  20. Decide on favors
  21. Mail invites 6 weeks from wedding
  22. Trial run for hair and make up
  23. Finalize seating chart (if applicable)
  24. Final dress fitting
  25. Confirm wedding timeline
  26. Confirm all vendors
  27. Pack for honeymoon!

These are the big items on the checklist. Of course you may have some others to focus on depending on your actual wedding. Just remember, if you look at the list as a whole, it can become overwhelming. Focus on the big parts and enjoy each moment!

Don't Panic!

Getting married can be stressful, but let it be a happy time! There are plenty of amazing vendors on Hilton Head Island here to serve your every need. Professional, friendly wedding vendors are here to serve you and make your day memorable.

How do you know you’re hiring the right vendor? Here are some tips:

  1. Ask how many years they’ve been in the business.
  2. See if they belong to any professional organizations. The Lowcountry Wedding Professionals have a Facebook page. “Like” them and read more about them!
  3. Reviews make a difference.  Both Wedding Wire.com and Wedding Channel.com are great resources to read what their past clients have to say about their work.
  4. Ask around. If you feel comfortable with your florist, for instance, ask him or her who they think would be the best vendor in the other categories you are looking to hire.
  5. How quick do they respond to your phone calls and email?  How well are they listening to your needs? Is there a good synergy between you and the vendor?
  6. What does your gut tell you? My mother always told me to trust the intuition we all have inside. If you are basing your final decision on price alone, you may get burnt. Your wedding day is too important to only go with the least expensive vendor.

I receive a lot of panic calls everyday from bride and grooms feeling completely overwhelmed. Once we take one item at a time and focus on the decisions that need to be made first (such as your venue and caterer), the rest will fall into place. Don’t jump to the 5th item on the list without crossing off the first 4 details.

Lastly, I can’t stress enough how important it is to hire a professional wedding planner. Even if you can only afford him or her the last week of the wedding, put it in the budget. Especially if you are a destination bride to Hilton Head Island!

The Hilton Head Island Chamber of Commerce is a great first resource to beginning your planning!

Best wishes!
