Daufuskie Island is only accessible by passenger ferry or boat—there is no bridge and cars aren’t permitted on the ferry. Parking is available on Hilton Head Island, check with your ferry or boat service for parking restrictions and designated areas.
Enjoy Daufuskie offers daily ferry service to Daufuskie Island’s Freeport Marina from Hilton Head Island and includes your choice of a two-hour guided tour and golf cart rental to explore the island on your own. The service also includes an hour-long boat ride complete with a narrated tour by local guides as your ferry makes its way over.
From Harbor Town you can take a water taxi through H2O Sports or arrive on Vegabond Cruises’ weekly tour. Outside Hilton Head offers the Daufuskie Island History & Artisans Tour, a half-day excursion that will take you to a number of historic landmarks as well as popular local artists’ studios.
The quickest way to travel to Daufuskie Island is by departing from Hilton Head’s Harbor Town Marina. A standard water taxi trip is just 15 minutes long.
Whether you’re just coming for the day or staying for a week, make sure you bring sunscreen, bug spray, and comfortable walking shoes. If you’re planning to stay in a rented condo or vacation home, bring groceries and supplies with you, as there is no grocery store on the island. If you’re staying overnight, it’s recommended to bring a few extra rolling suitcases, and a rolling cooler for refrigerated items. The Freeport General Store at the Freeport Marina does stock a few essentials in case you forget something.
One of the things that makes Daufuskie Island so unique is the lack of cars—everybody travels around via electric golf cart. You can rent your own cart for getting around while you’re here, but if you are renting a home or villa, check with the rental company because many properties include a cart with your rental.
Day-trippers and those whose rentals do not include a golf cart can pre-arrange to have a golf cart waiting as soon as you arrive on the island through one of the local tour companies.
Even though nothing is ever very far away, every road on the island meanders. To help you find your way, you can download a map of the island. But trust us, sometimes the best things are found while getting lost.
