Public Schools

Hilton Head Island is within the Beaufort County School District, which is among the 500 largest school districts in the nation. 
 
Formed in 1970 by the merger of two existing public school systems, the district is governed by a citizen school board of 11 elected members. The district has a student population of approximately 18,000 from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade, enrolled at 17 elementary schools, five middle schools and four high schools.
  
About 90 percent of the county's school-age population is enrolled in the district, which has a student-teacher ratio of 16 to one.  More than 55 percent of the district's teachers hold advanced degrees or specialist teaching certificates.
  
Student achievement, measured on standardized tests, has risen some 40 percent since 1990, and the district's Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) scores have risen more than 23 points during the last seven years. The district's motto, "Innovation to Excellence," reflects its commitment to connecting each child to a successful future through quality Hilton Head, South Carolina education.
  
When entering the Beaufort County School District for the first time, students must provide: 
 
(1) a record of immunization from their physician or the county   health department; 
(2) birth certificate; 
(3) Social Security card; and 
(4) proof of residence. 
  
When transferring from another district, students must provide:

(1) the transcript of their academic record, including a record of immunization; 
(2) birth certificate; 
(3) social security card; and 
(4) proof of residence.
